Saving Electricity Saves You Money and The Environment. Learn some easy tips how to cut your consumption (and bill) down.

One of the best(and easiest) things you can do to give yourself some extra money each month is to cut down on your energy consumption. A few years ago when we were trying to cut back on our debt, I decided the easiest way to have extra money was to not spend money. I decided to try to cut back all of my utility bills by being more efficient. I was shocked that implementing a few really easy changes and habits cut our monthly electric bill by $40 a month! When we moved into our new house I contacted the electric company to sign up for budget billing. Budget billing allows you to pay the same amount every month and is based on an average of past usage. Because we had just bought the house the electric company said they would use all the past usage by its previous owner to get an average. They said it would only be a little over $300.00a month!!!!!! WHAT? I admittedly freaked out. They said we could pay the old fashioned month to month way, but that it would probably be the same. Well after living here 1 year I called them back(they use 1 year's worth of usages to estimate your monthly average) And guess what? My bill is only $113.00 a month now. At one point they even called to check to see if we were still living in the house because the kilowatts used were so low!
The top 2 things you can do to save electricity is change your light bulbs to energy efficient ones and use power strips for everything.
If you're like my husband and hate that the energy efficient lights aren't bright when you first turn them on, good news. They have created an instant bright energy efficient bulb! Now don't just go out and spend a lot on bulbs. They can be pricey. Look out for a good sale. Memorial Day is a great time to find light bulb deals.
Plugging appliance into power strips allows you to turn off ALL the power, meaning that clock on the microwave you never look at won't be using electricity when your not cooking. TVs, game systems and blu ray players use a TON of energy when they are not even on! This is referred to as vampire energy. Plugging them into a power strip and turning it off will cut down on your kilowatts dramatically. Keep in mind if you have a DVR that records programs, you will need to keep that plugged into a power source at all times in order to record. If you don't like the idea of having to get up to switch a power strip off every time you turn off the tv(especially if you watch tv in bed like us) They make remote controlled power strips. My favorite one that I recommend allows you to keep some things plugged in to a side that always gets power(great for your DVR) and the rest gets turned off with a remote. You can learn more or purchase one HERE from amazon.com. This is the one I have but they also have bigger ones with more outlets.
Luckily my electric company has created a webpage aimed at teaching you how to conserve electricity and money. It lists a lot of great tips. All of which I use. You can visit the site http://www.duke-energy.com/youtility/tips/ to learn more. The following pictures and links come directly from Duke Energy's new youtilty site.

Rita's has Partnered with Alex's Lemonade Stand.
In 2006, Rita's became a proud corporate partner of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding pediatric cancer research and finding a cure for the disease. Named in honor of the late Alexandra “Alex” Scott, the foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) public charity, has raised more than $50 million toward fulfilling Alex's dream of finding a cure, funding over 200 research projects nationally.

When embarking on the fundraising initiative in 2006, Rita’s set a goal to raise $100,000 by selling paper lemons to Rita’s guests for $1 each at every store location. With the support of our guests, franchise partners and Treat Team members, Rita’s raised a remarkable $510,000 to the foundation – more than five times the original goal.

In 2007, Rita's franchise partners, Treat Team members and guests raised $530,000 to help ALSF and in 2008 Rita's raised $520,000. In June 2009, Rita’s raised $450,000 to help find a cure for childhood cancer.

During our annual paper lemon campaign held in June 2011, Rita's was able to collect $545,000 and we are happy to have raised and donated more than $3 million to ALSF.

We would like to thank each of our guests who purchased a paper lemon for $1 to help us support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation's fight against childhood cancer. Together, we are helping to put the squeeze on pediatric cancer, one lemon at a time!

Favorite Bible Verses Page

This is the last of the pages featured on the top left hand side of the blog.

Even if you are not a Christian, you can find so much comfort in the words below.

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.~ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT
Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive.~ Titus 3:14, NLT
And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.~ Titus 2:7, NLT
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun.~ 2 Cor. 5:17, NLT
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.~ Psalm 37:23, NLT
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.~ 1 Corinthians 13:7, NLT
Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.~ Romans 12:9, NLT
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.~ Romans 5:3, NLT
Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.~ Romans 12:12, NLT
For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven... ~Psalm 139:13-15 ESV
Lo, children are a heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that has his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Psalm 127: 3-5 KJV
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. ~ John 3:17, NLT
When you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.~ Jeremiah 29:12, NLT
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly father.~ Matthew 5:16, NLT
And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. ~Philemon 1:6 NIV
So let's stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.~ Romans 14:13, NLT
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people ~ Colossians 3:23, NLT

Safe Families When crisis strikes, many of us rely on relatives and our church family for support. But for some parents, there isn't a safety net. Often problems such as drug addiction, domestic abuse, incarceration, or illness can be debilitating, making it impossible for parents to care for their children. Since 2005, Safe Families for Children has offered sanctuary to thousands of children, minimizing the risk for abuse or neglect and giving parents the time and tools they need to help their families thrive. The ultimate goal is to strengthen and support parents so they can become Safe Families for their own children. http://www.safe-families.org/

Programs for Families in Crisis

Safe Families for Children has offered sanctuary to thousands of children, minimizing the risk for abuse or neglect and giving parents the time and tools they need to help their families thrive. The ultimate goal is to strengthen and support parents so they can become Safe Families for their own children.

Safe Families for Children strives to meet three objectives:
  1. Child Welfare Deflection: Safe Families provides a safe alternative to child welfare custody, thus significantly reducing the number of children entering the child welfare system.
  2. Child Abuse Prevention: Providing an overwhelmed and resource limited parent with a safe, temporary place for their child without threat of losing custody. By offering support, the goal is to avert potential abuse/neglect episodes.
  3. Family Support and Stabilization: Many parents struggle because of limited social support and unavailable extended family. Many Safe Families Volunteers become the extended family that a parent never had.
Hallmarks of a Safe Family Model:
  • Biological Parents maintain full custody
  • Volunteer families are extensively screened and supported
  • Six-week average length of stay (ranging from two days to a year)
  • Average age of child in SFFC care is 4.5
  • Close working relationships between Safe Families, the local church, and the referring organization
  • Commitment to reunite the family as soon as possible
