Did you know that you're paying for electrical use even when your appliances are turned off?!!! Learn how to help cut down on energy vampires and save a TON of electricity and money.

Your appliances and other plugged in devices are sucking up energy costs when they're not even on!!! Plug things into power strips that can be turned off when not in use, get a remote controlled power strip for items with hard to reach plugs(search for belkin power strips in stores or online. link below to my fave.), and unplug cell phone and other chargers when not in use.

If you have an electric hot water heater, you can turn it on and off to save a TON of money. They even sell timers that can be installed. It turns them off (usually during the day) and back on just before you'll need it. The water doesn't need to be super hot all day long, just when you'll need it. It will stay pretty warm for a LONG time, so shutting it on and off won't keep you from having hot water. Please note that this can only be done with electric hot water heaters. DO NOT TURN OFF GAS HOT WATER HEATERS!!! This could result in a gas leak and possibly carbon monoxide poisoning.

Here's a guide to what you might be paying even when things are "off". http://www.tvsnob.com/pictures/008_vampire_energy.php

This is the remote controlled power strip we have.  I like it because you can plug 2 things in that never turn off. This is good for things that you want to have on at all times such as you modem, router, or dvr (if you use it to record shows).
